A woman’s arms are strong because she has to shove against ceilings she can see through to get her little piece of sky

They are strong because they cook the meal and clean it up, then carry you to bed

A woman’s arms are strong because they are always open

They are strong because she holds a bag full of makeup in one hand and the weight of the world in the other

A woman’s arms are strong because she has to have them ready with a can of mace and keys turned into claws while she walks

They are strong because they have to pull up her pants; the pants her sisters died for

A woman’s arms are strong from lifting an infant to her nipple, and from closing the door while she does so, because men have decided that her nipple is theirs alone to claim or shame

They are strong because they build; from your house, to your lego set, to your hopes and your dreams

A woman’s arms are strong because they are hot with anger, and the blood that rushes through them is thick with remembering

They are strong because she protects you

A woman’s arms are strong because they are the orchestrator of her deepest pleasure

They are strong because they are putting out ten times the effort for half the reward

A woman’s arms are strong because she holds herself while she is sleeping; she is the warrior who will fend off her nightmares, and your own

They are strong because they are always, always working

A woman’s arms are strong because she had to lay her baby in the ground, and keep on breathing

They are strong because she will not let you down, even when she has fallen

A woman’s arms are strong because every time a man tells her to smile she must tense them by her side to keep from striking out; she must tense them to make sure his privilege does not end her story

They are strong because she is pushing you forward, into the unknown, because she knows what you are capable of

A woman’s arms are strong because they are thrust with fists into the air, in victory and rebellion

They are strong because she nurses you to health when her own body is bending and breaking, fevered and aching

A woman’s arms are strong because she is dancing

In the joy of today

In the promise of tomorrow

And in spite of all her pain

A woman’s arms are strong because they can wipe his nose, and braid her hair, and sign that contract, and cash that check, and hold your hand, and hold her own greatness all without breaking a sweat

They are strong because they belong to a woman
